John Lawrence was born in England in 1929, and graduated from Wimbledon School of Art after WWII.
He has worked in studios in Finland, the UK and in France, and helped to establish a ceramics department at Luton School of Art.
Lawrence continued to teach in Luton alongside his partner, ceramicist Ann Verdcourt. Together they immigrated to New Zealand in 1965 and started producing ceramics in Dannevirke.
This recent body of work 'Aesop's fables', 2010-11, is inspired by Lawrence's childhood memory of reading Aesop's fables by candlelight in the bombproof shelters in WWII.
