'I am interested in the simplification of form, the manipulation and relationship of line, edge, volume, surface and spatial tension within/around each ceramic object. These are objectives central to my current practice.
Each series of works draws upon the shifting emphasis and weighting of these elements in order to highlight or explore a particular visual language.'
Mark Mitchell’s study of art began in Wanganui and continued at Otago Polytechnic where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002. He has continued to further his academic experience and to tutor in clay atHungryCreekArtSchoolnear Puhoi.
Mitchell’s work has been regularly selected for the prestigious Portage Awards and he has been invited to participate in group shows throughout theNorthIsland. He is one of a number of exciting emergingNew Zealandceramicists making individual statements in the medium of clay.
Mitchell uses the vessel to explore notions of form and surface, producing strong sculptural works with subtle crackled and metallic finishes.
