Jim Dennison and Leanne Williams collaborate on their glass sculptures as The Crystal Chain Gang, which often explore elements that they have identified as key parts of New Zealand iconography; such as the garden rose or the lamb.
Jim Dennison completed a Diploma of Glass Production at Wanganui Polytechnic in 2001, following a BSC from Victoria University (1997). His glass has been recognised through its inclusion in a number of major exhibitions and publications since 2001, most recently selected as part of the Southern Exposure exhibition selected for touring to the Ebeltoft Glasmusum in Demark (2004).
Leanne Williams completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts - Painting at Wanganui Polytechnic in 2001, following a BA and Teaching Diploma from Victoria University and Wellington College of Education (1992 - 4). She has established a career as an artist working in with a range of media and techniques, and an arts educator, teaching Fine Arts at Wanganui UCOL and Wellington Institute of Technology. Her collaborative work with Dennison has featured in several major exhibitions including Southern Exposure exhibition selected for touring to the Ebeltoft Glasmusum in Demark (2004).
Dennison and Williams are challenging the technical and structural boundaries of glass. The scale and forms that they work with combine cast glass components with structural steel, paint and other materials. Pieces are usually freestanding, wall-mounted, or hung, further challenging the audience in their expectations of the medium of glass.
