Mary Curtis has been making jewellery since 1986. She is currently a lecturer in jewellery and 3D concerns on the Bachelor of Visual Arts at Manukau Institute of Technology.
Decoration is central to a jewellers practice and my jewellery focuses on exploring this concept. We decorate objects and people to elevate and draw visual attention to them.
Ever since Adolf Loos declared war on ornament in his 1908 essay Ornament and Crime, decoration has been viewed with a great deal of derision. However decoration is fundamental to the human condition and a pivotal part of ceremony, celebration, festivity and enhancement. My practice is about exploring and celebrating the decorative.
