Now retired, Ray Stokes spent most of his working life in the car assembly industry. Over the past thirty or so years he has pursued dual interests in prospecting for semi-precious stones, and combining them with silver to create original, classical jewellery.
Stokes has won a succession of amateur awards - both in New Zealand and Australia. He is entirely self-taught and in most instances each component of his work is made by hand. More recently he has begun designing fine silver chains - many of them woven so finely they look more like silk than silver.
Individual pieces often feature New Zealand nephrite jade.
