Kawakawa pounamu; 58 x 54 x 18mm; From Tai Timu Tai Pari exhibtion, August 2016.

The ebb and flow of the tides.

Te Moananui-a-Kiwa (Pacific Ocean) the huge blue expanse that we live in, connects us to thousands of Islands with diverse cultures and people. The constant roar of waves lapping our shores, rolling in and rolling out.

Marama, Hine te iwaiwa, Hina, the moon controls the tides.  She takes many forms and with each form there is change.

Ari, Hotu, Mawharu, Atua, Ohua, Turu, Rakau-nui, Rakau-matohi, Takirau, Oike, Korekore.

The Tuangi Haruru (ringed venus) shells are paired, the top row above the equator and the bottom row below, Southern Hemisphere.  The cord connects the two shells with the moon cycles influencing each other with constant tension.

Pounamu shells with red designs symbolise the connection to the pacific and Aotearoa reminiscent of tattoo lines, blood lines, markings on skin.

We as Pacific people are all interconnected.

The ebbs and flows of the tides influence our existence.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini

My strength is not that of a single warrior it is the strength of many.
