Andy Kingston - Bootlegged Bottle-fed Baby
21 February - 18 March 2017
preview Wednesday 22 February from 5-7pm
Bootlegged Bottle-fed Baby is the latest exhibition by ceramic artist Andy Kingston. Drawing and music have been a constant in Andy’s life, having always drawn from a young age and played music. Growing up in remote Northland both played an important part in forming his identity. This latest series of works sees Andy’s iconic pop culture inspired work return in the format of wall works. Works are a combination of single wall dishes and sets across a number of themes. All works are portraits drawn from pop culture references that Andy has an emotional connection to, some are musicians, characters from movies, television series, and sporting figures from both his childhood and present day. Andy uses a number of techniques including sgraffito and painting to create his images on press moulded forms that often have carved frames, all done by hand. With works such as Sound Lounge Series, Mach’s Gut Pork Pie Series, Ali’s Game Series (Karate Kid) and Mixed Martial Crafts – covering Mixed Martial Arts, not to mention a Game of Thrones Series. Along with single works depicting Philip Clairmont and Ralph Hotere, there is sure to be something for everyone.
Sound Lounge Series includes music great such as Nina Simone, John Lennon, David Bowie, Kurt Cobain and Townes van Zandt in the set of 17.
Mixed Martial Craft Series includes figures such as Amanda Nunes, Nate Diaz, Conor MacGregor, Kimbo Slice and Ronda Rousey.
