Folding Form is an investigation into the materiality and potential of thin metal sheet through the process of folding. Through this body of work, Laura presents objects that are sculptural as well as wearable. From a single thin, flat surface comes a three-dimensional form with depth, height and volume.
Bending and creasing is consciously used in order to work harden the thin metal, giving great strength and rigidity to an otherwise soft material. By discovering these forms through hands-on making, the resulting shapes inspire creative solutions for findings to attach object to wearer. Laura has focused on fabricating findings from within the same sheet of metal, producing expressive forms that are simple, fluid and all-inclusive.
Laura Jer graduated from Unitec in 2013 with a Bachelor of Design and Visual Arts (Contemporary Jewellery). She now works at Whau Studios in Point Chevalier, Auckland.
