Stories and their Objects
27 July – 17 August 2019
Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by stories and the objects that go with them. Lucky things, magical things, precious things, secret things. Our brains have evolved to learn using stories and we create objects to remind ourselves of them. They act like hooks in our memory, so knowledge is passed on more easily.
I am equally intrigued by the way these objects can gather their own stories as they make their way through the world. It gives me so much pleasure when people see their own stories in objects that I have made. It adds to the layers of meanings an object has and gives it a life of its own.
This series of work is an ever-evolving set of objects exploring symbolism based on small stories that reflect everyday moments of unexpected poignancy. All those in between stories that help us learn and grow, and that make up life in between the big events.
