Stevei Houkāmau
Stevei Houkāmau (Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) is a contemporary Māori artist working across uku, whakairo, sculpture, adornment and installation.
Her practice treats clay as a living language through which whakapapa, memory and inherited knowledge can be carried forward and reshaped. Drawing from tā moko, whakairo and Indigenous systems of making, she creates highly resolved forms that move between taonga, body and architecture.
In 2026, Houkāmau was foregrounded as a wāhine whakairo artist in Te Papa’s landmark exhibition He Toi Whakairo: The Art of Māori Carving.
Her work is held in collections nationally and internationally, including Te Papa and The Dowse Art Museum.
